The Textile Museum of Canada embraces community and cultural diversity, and promotes an understanding of human identity through textiles. The Textile Museum's collection now encompasses more than 12,000 pieces, representing over 200 countries and regions. Exhibitions showcase objects from various cultures, and educational programs are designed to foster an awareness and understanding of these cultures through hands-on activities, lectures, tours and special events. Through partnerships and interaction with local, national and international communities, the TMC has become a place where individuals can come together to share their experiences, and contribute to the activities of the institution.
Not only does the TMC present audiences with opportunities to view historic artifacts, it also provides Canadian and international artists with a place to present their work. The TMC presents new and provocative works that would not necessarily find exposure in a mainstream setting. The careers of many established and emerging artists have been fostered through the Museum's contemporary art program and residencies.
The TMC offers something for everyone with a wide range of complementary programming, including workshops, lectures and performances. Families can explore fibre, discover meaning and create woven works of art in fibrespace - the Museum's educational hands-on gallery. The Museum Shop offers unique gifts and books, as well as one-of-a-kind fashion accessories and home decorations by Canadian and international artisans. Researchers and students can take advantage of the holdings in the H. N. Pullar Reference Library, or can arrange a study or research visit. Finally, the TMC's 60 seat auditorium is the perfect place to host a lecture, performance, screening or special event. |
